A field geologist is a scientist who studies geology outdoors. The field geologist studies bedrock exposures by determining the rock type, the minerals present, and the structures present (folds, faults, fractures). With this information, as well as orientation data on the rock layers, the field geologist creates a map showing the distribution of rocks in an area. Other geologists can use this map for environmental work or exploration, but they don't have the great adventures that the field geologist does. While working in the field, a field geologist uses a hammer, a compass for taking orientations, a field notebook, and a mineral testing kit. Rugged clothes and sturdy hiking boots are also helpful. |
